William H. Monkemeier, age 97, of Sheldon, Iowa, died Saturday, October 7, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center in George, Iowa.
Services for Mr. Monkemeier will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Ashton Bible Church in Ashton, Iowa, with Reverend James Brown and Pastor Oryn Meinerts officiating. Burial will be in the Gilman Township Cemetery near Ashton. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 9, 2006 at the Walton-Rose Funeral Home in Ashton, where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
William H. Monkemeier, son of Fred and Martha (Washer) Monkemeier, was born on a farm between George and Ashton, Iowa on July 4, 1909. He received his education at a country school.
Bill was united in marriage to Rose Pomrenke at her parents’ home at rural Ashton on December 25, 1935. Their union was blessed with two daughters: Shirley and Karen.
Following their marriage, Bill and Rose farmed near Archer, Iowa, before purchasing their farm near Ritter, Iowa. They were engaged in farming there from 1941 to 1983. Bill retired from active participation in farming at the age of 74. Bill and Rose moved to Sheldon, Iowa, in 1983. Rose died in 1988.
On May 13, 1989, Bill married Beverly (Thoelke) Cassens at the Tabernacle Baptist Church at George. Bill and Beverly moved to George and then returned to Sheldon in the fall of 2002 to make their home at the Christian Retirement Home. Beverly died in 2004.
Bill entered the George Good Samaritan Center in George on October 2, 2006, and lived there until his death.
Those who will always love and cherish his memory are his daughters: Shirley Winkowitsch of Ashton, Iowa, Karen (Daryl) Olson of Albuquerque, New Mexico; his grandchildren: David (Janna) Winkowitsch, Sharis (Chris) Wolfram, Dennis (Kim) Winkowitsch, Mary (Mark) Swanson, Sharla (Ryan) Klingenberg, Stanley (Lea) Winkowitsch; his great grandchildren: Olivia and Sophia Winkowitsch, Karyl and Benjamin Wolfram, Derek and Daren Winkowitsch, Jessica and Nicholas Swanson, Taylor, Brent, and Nathan Klingenberg; his brother, Loyal (Inez) Monkemeier of Sanborn, Iowa; four step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives: Rose and Beverly; a grandson: Steven Olson; three sisters: Margie, Irene, and Pearl; one brother, Raymond; and a son-in-law, Edlyn Winkowitsch.
Bill was a member of the Ashton Bible Church and he also enjoyed the fellowship and worship at the Tabernacle Baptist Church while he lived in George. Bill enjoyed playing table games and pool, and in his later years he fixed chairs for many people. He loved sharing jokes with everyone and will be remembered for his great sense of humor. Bill was always ready to give testimony to the saving grace of God, through faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
