Walter Wilkens, age 92, of Albert City, Iowa died Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 18, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City. Burial will follow in the St. John's United Church of Christ Cemetery in rural Newell, Iowa. Visitation will take place Sunday, April 17, 2016 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
Walter H. Wilkens the son of William and Lina (Bockhop) Wilkens was born near Newell, Iowa, in Coon Township on February 7, 1924.
Walt was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Evangelical Reformed Church in rural Newell, which later became St. John’s United Church of Christ. He received his education at a country school. Walt helped his parents farm until he was married.
On May 28, 1950, Walt was united in marriage to Lucille Sievers at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. This marriage was blessed with three children: Paul, Sharon, and Carol. During their married lifetime, Walt and Lucille were engaged in farming.
Following the retirement from their farm, the couple moved to Albert City. Walt continued to work for area farmers. He was a very active member of his church and community. Walt served in all offices of the church and was a Sunday school teacher. Walt was also a Lincoln Township Trustee, a 4-H leader, the treasurer of the Lion’s Club, served on the Library Board, was president of the Young at Heart Club, and drove the Pleasant View van for two years, and was a caretaker of the cemetery. He even was named the Albert City Citizen of the Year in 2002. Walt truly enjoyed helping people.
In 2011, Walt and Lucille became members of the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Albert City. Walt and Lucille were blessed to share 65 years together in marriage.
Walt’s life will always be honored and cherished by his family which include his wife: Lucille of Albert City, Iowa; son: Paul (Pam Bishop) of Florence, Alabama; daughters: Sharon (Mike) Leimer of Blue Springs, Missouri; Carol (Dan) Blevins of Raytown, Missouri; grandchildren: David Leimer of Kansas City, Missouri; Emily (Kyle) Shipp of Yigo, Guam; Chris (Kim) Blevins of Kansas City, Missouri; Stephen Leimer of Kansas City, Missouri; Derek Blevins of Bolivar, Missouri; Katie Blevins and fiancée Jeron Tucker of Overland Park, Kansas; brother, Gilbert (Sally) Wilkens of Storm Lake, Iowa; sister, Wilma (Kenneth) Johnson of Columbus, Ohio; sister-in-law, Phyllis Rohlfsen of Newell, Iowa; other extended family and many friends.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother-in-law, Orlen Rohlfsen.
