Viola B. Ehlers

Viola B. Ehlers, age 98, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 19, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the CHURCH. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.  

Viola Bertha Ehlers, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Ripke) Ehlers, was born August 3, 1922 on the farm north of Newell, Iowa. Viola was baptized as an infant at Zion Lutheran Church rural Storm Lake. She later was confirmed at the same church in 1936.

Growing up, Viola attended grade school through 8th grade at Zion Lutheran School rural Storm Lake. She attended Albert City High School for two years, then graduated from High School and college at Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, with minors in music and German. She then furthered her education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where she earned her master’s degree in Music. Viola taught in many Lutheran elementary schools throughout the United States for 40 years. She was known to be a conscientious and hardworking teacher, often having large classrooms with multiple grade levels.

Once Viola retired in 1987, she returned to Storm Lake. She kept busy during her retirement years, playing organ at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake where she was a member. She also taught piano lessons, taught ESL and GED classes and sewed quilt tops for missions.  She was known for her green thumb, maintaining a garden, flower bed and many house plants. Viola lived out her life of faith in her Lord Jesus as a faithful servant to Him.

Viola is survived by many nieces and nephews as well as extended family and friends.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Bertha Ehlers; brothers: Helmuth and John Ehlers; sisters, Helen Pingel and Clara Boettcher.
