Rueben Earl Burow was born near Pomeroy on September 17th, 1929 and lived on a farm with his parents William and Elsie Burow, brothers Melvin and Lloyd and sisters Maxine and Vera. He fought overseas in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 in the Army before returning to Iowa.
He married Idris Anderson in October 1955 in the Albert City Evangelical Free Church. Three years later their only son, Randy was born. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Rueben primarily worked on road maintenance for Buena Vista County, retiring after 38 years service in 1991. He took great pride in his work. He was a volunteer firefighter for 21 years with the Albert City Fire Department and became an Emergency Medical Technician in 1974.
Rueben enjoyed fishing, gardening, hunting, and woodworking. He was known for growing the cabbage and making the sauerkraut for the Thresherman’s Show for many years. He loved spending time with his Grandson and teaching him to fish. He worked hard next to his son on their many remodeling projects. During retirement, Rueben and Idris spent several many winters in South Texas where they enjoyed activities and meeting friends from Minnesota, Oregon, and Canada.
Rueben always had a smile and laugh as he would strike up a conversation with almost anyone. He enjoyed just sitting on the front step or on a chair in the driveway to greet all those driving by with a smile and wave.
