Orvel "Bud" Ruhs

Orvel "Bud" Ruhs, age 91, of Spencer, Iowa, formerly of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on February 5, 2022 in Spencer, Iowa.

Memorial services will take place Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.  A visitation will be held Friday, April 29, 2022 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in SIOUX RAPIDS. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of arrangements. 

Orvel “Bud” Ruhs was born on July 22, 1930 in Hildreth, Nebraska to Ludwig and Hannah (Post) Ruhs. Bud was baptized in 1930 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hildreth, Nebraska. He was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, Iowa. Bud attended grade school in Schaller and high school in Alta, graduating in 1948. He enlisted in the Air Force in December 1950. While in the military, he completed Aircraft and Engine School, and Flight Engineering and Engine Specialist School. He served four years during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in September 1954. After returning home, Bud attended Vocational Agriculture School which prepared him for his chosen career in farming.

On July 8, 1956, Bud was united in marriage to Sharon Pritchard in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. To this union, three children were born: Steven, Roger, and Jill.

Bud enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, trapping, and looking for Indian artifacts. He loved taking drives to look at crops and wildlife and visiting with everyone along the way. The time he spent with his children and grandchildren was what he treasured the most.

Bud was a member of the First United Church in Sioux Rapids where he taught Sunday School. He belonged to the American Legion Post 394 for 45 years. Bud was a former commander and was proud to help in parades and funerals. Bud will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bud is survived by his children: Steven (Cynthia) Ruhs of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Roger (Diane) Ruhs of Magdalena, New  Mexico; Jill (Steve) Morgan of Tucson, Arizona; sisters: LaVera (Bob) Prunty of Rochelle, Illinois; Lorna (Russ) Butler of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandchildren: Michael (Sarah) Ruhs of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Alyssa (Dustin) Rinnert of Spencer, Iowa; Ryan Ruhs of Spencer, Iowa; David Krieg of Belton, Texas; Sharie (Sam) Insana of Tucson, Arizona; Andres Martinez of Tucson, Arizona; Melanie (Shane) Parrish of Brunswick, Georgia; Gabriel (Lacy) Martinez of Argyle, Texas; Danny Morgan of Tucson, Arizona; 16 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.

Bud is preceded in death by his parents, Ludwig and Hannah (Post) Ruhs, and brothers-in-law: Bob Prunty and Russel Butler.
