Nelda attended Sioux Valley Community School, graduating in 1961.  After high school she attended and graduated from National Business Training College in Sioux City.

Nelda moved to Storm Lake after her graduation from business school and worked for Vilas & Company, Chamber of Commerce, Buena Vista Stationery and Printing, and Buena Vista County Farm Bureau where she worked for 44 years, retiring in 2015.  She was very skilled in office procedures and was sought out by many individuals for assistance.

Nelda was active in her church; typing the church bulletin, teaching Sunday School, serving on committees, preparing food, and volunteering in many other ways.  Nelda was a strong supporter of kids and education having established scholarships in memory of friends, Shirley Sorbe and Harriet Henry.  Nelda was well known for the knitting of stocking caps, vests, and personalized Christmas stockings for numerous families and their pets.  She was a co-founder of a sewing group, Labor of Love, and personally sewed hundreds of dresses that were shipped and distributed to girls in Uganda through Show Mercy International. Nelda also created home made greeting cards, never missing a family member’s birthday or anniversary.

Nelda enjoyed bowling for many years, treasuring the friendships she had with team members.  She enjoyed the stock car races at Buena Vista Raceway in Alta, very seldom missing a race.  She loved her flower beds and garden.  Many of her tube rose bulbs each year were distributed to family and friends as well as produce from her garden.

Spending time with family and friends was Nelda’s greatest pleasure.  She was a very active aunt and attended many activities of her nieces and nephews.  She also had numerous dogs and cats over the years that she adored.

Nelda had a smile that lit up a room and was a loving, kind, generous, positive, and spiritual individual.  She had strength beyond measure when it came to overcoming various health issues, including her years of battling cancer.
