He was born on August 21, 1936 to Charles John and Martha Caroline (Pietsch) Meyers at Swallum Hospital in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Melvin attended public school in Albert City until his family relocated to a farm near Pomeroy, Iowa, where he continued his education at a country grade school and Pomeroy High School, graduating in 1954. He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and participated in the first confirmation class at their new church building. Melvin furthered his education at Buena Vista College and Iowa State University before being inducted into the US Army in November 1959.
During his military service, Melvin received training as a Missile Mechanic for the Nike Hercules Missile at Redstone Arsenal Rocket and Space Center in Huntsville, Alabama. He was then stationed at the 30th Ordinance Nike Site in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was trained further for an overseas deployment. Subsequently, Melvin's unit was deployed to South Korea, where they set up missile launchers on the west shorelines of the Korean Peninsula.
Following his military service, Melvin returned to civilian life and began his career at Wincharger Corporation, a subsidiary of Zenith Radio Corporation in Chicago, Illinois. He later transferred to Zenith Radio Corporation of Iowa in Sioux City and eventually settled on a farm near Linn Grove, Iowa, in the fall of 1977.
Mel was not your average ”fix it man” as there was no project too big or too small for his capable hands and analytical mind. Electrician, mechanic, carpenter, woodworker - his broad set of skills could help a neighbor with electrical work, repair farming equipment, build a home for his family, or create a beautiful Apostle’s clock.
In addition to his professional life, Melvin was devoted to his family and community. He married Mary Lee on June 18, 1966, and together they were blessed with two sons, Mark and Stephen, and a daughter, Ruth. Melvin was a member of American Legion Post #367 and a proud Cold War Patriot. An active member of Riverside Church, he and Mary Lee also participated in the Local Storm Lake Chapter of The Gideons.
Melvin's legacy is one of service, dedication, and love for his family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Martha, brother Charles, and his half brother Raymond. He is survived by his wife Mary Lee; his three children: 1) Mark (Karen) Meyers of Blaine, MN; grandchildren, Mackenzie (Jared) Darula, Benjamin, Samuel and Gabrielle; 2) Stephen (Wendy) Meyers of Linn Grove, IA; grandchildren, Jacob (Sally Peterson - fiancée) Meyers, Emma (Derek) Buysse; great-grandchildren, Ruby and Lily; 3) Ruth (Heather Fjare) Meyers of Loveland, CO…and many dear friends and family.
