Martin Michael Henry Mack Sr., the son of Ernest & Ida (Meyer) Mack, was born on August 26, 1917 in Knoke, Iowa. As an infant, he was baptized into the Lutheran faith and was later confirmed.
Growing up, Martin attended St. Paul Lutheran School in Knoke, Iowa. He graduated from 8th grade in 1931 and started High school in the fall of 1931. He attended 6 weeks of high school but due to an injury his father sustained, he was pulled from High School to tend the farm. His sister Joann was born in the Spring of 1932 and Martin was needed to "help with housework which included baking 8 loaves of bread a day" (his own words) and Martin never went back to finish high school.
On May 17, 1942, Martin was united in marriage to Marie Schofield in Knoke. The couple was blessed with nine children: Martin, Anita, Coelet, Kelvin, Sheldon, Renae, Scott, Sandra, and Staci.
In 1942, Martin enlisted in the United States Army. Martin fought in World War II and served in the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theaters. He was honorably discharged on November 13, 1945.
Martin was a long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. He was an active member and served as Head Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, Choir, and Altar Guild. He was also a member of the Alta VFW as well as A.A. where he celebrated 53+ years of sobriety.
In his free time, Martin loved gardening and canning all his home-grown vegetables. He also enjoyed cooking and baking, especially for his family. When Martin wasn’t in the garden, he could be found watching sports or playing card/board games with his family.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Martin (Carolyn) Mack Jr., Anita Mack, Coelet (Ron) Peters, Kelvin Mack, Sheldon (Cindy) Mack, Renae Norwood, Scott (fiancé, Molly Montag) Mack, Sandra (Jerry) Bell, Staci (Timothy) Olson; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Marge Hoefing and Janis Schofield; extended family and friends; also, his family at Marian Home which he came to love over the last decade of his life.
