Martha (Lane) Harald, age 79, of Albert City, Iowa died Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 15, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City. Burial will be in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will take place Sunday, June 14, 2015 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
Martha Jean Rogers, the daughter of Carlyle and Gladys (Miller) Rogers, was born at Dubuque, Iowa, on November 23, 1935. She lived in Dubuque County and the city of Dubuque for the first 19 years of her life. Martha was a 1954 graduate of the Dubuque Senior High School.
On November 25, 1954, Martha was united in marriage to Burdette Lane and the couple made their home at Marathon, Iowa. On March 1, 1955, they moved to a farm northeast of Webb and resided there for 23 years. They were blessed with four children: Cynthia Jean, Gary William, Kathryn Kay, and Patricia Joy. Martha and Burdette returned to Marathon in 1978. Martha was employed at numerous jobs throughout her lifetime including being a CNA at nursing homes and private homes, an employee of the grease gun factory, and working at the A & M Laundry in Spencer. Burdette passed away on June 21, 1986. On October 1, 1988, Martha married Wendell Harald and they moved to Albert City. Wendell died on July 13, 1998. The remaining years of Martha’s life were spent in Albert City.
Martha had been a member of the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Albert City from 1988 to 2005. While attending that church, she served on the church council, various committees within the church, served as WELCA president, sang in the church choir, and taught the 8th grade Sunday School class. Martha later became a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Albert City and served on committees, sang and played the piano for the church, taught the adult Sunday School Class and was a substitute Sunday School teacher. Martha had been a member of “Just A Club”, the Golden Rule Club since 1988, the Albert City “Red Hatters” and “The Best Camping Club (anyone would have). Martha shared her musical gifts with many churches, nursing homes, and people throughout her lifetime as well as singing for many funerals and weddings. In addition to music, Martha was an avid reader.
The memory of Martha’s life will always be cherished by her children: Cynthia Johannsen, of Eagan, Minnesota; Gary and Dori Lane of Spencer, Iowa; Kathryn Chadwick of Rolfe, Iowa; Patricia and David Koons of Estherville, Iowa; grandchildren: Jonathan and Katie Johannsen, Sheila and Paul Devine, Leah Lane, Seth Lane, Levi Lane, Riley Koons, and Stephanie Koons; great grandchildren: Ava, Isaiah, and Jocelyn Devine; sister, Lois Dale of Dubuque, Iowa; six sisters-in-law; eight nieces and nephews; other extended family and many friends.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 31 years, Burdette; husband, Wendell; son-in-law, Mark Chadwick; brother, Reverend Charles E. Rogers; and nephew, David Story.
