Marshall Emmanuel Peterson, the son of Gustaf and Christine (Soderstrom) Peterson, was born near Albert City on June 29, 1933. He attended a country school located between Albert City and Laurens, graduating from Albert City High School in May of 1952.

Marshall worked on the farm with his father and then entered the United States Army, but due to his mechanical skills was assigned to the US Navy serving in the engine room of the USS Bayfield from December 1, 1955 until August 25, 1957. He later moved to Spencer, where He worked at the Spencer Municipal Utilities, tending to the steam operated electric generators.

On September 18, 1957, Marshall was united in marriage to Janice Anne Newgard at the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Minnesota. Marshall and Janice met when she was five years old and he was nine years old. The couple were blessed with four children: Becky, Jerry, Laurie, and Jeff. Following their marriage, they had a fishing honeymoon in northern Minnesota and created a home in Spencer, Iowa. In the Spring of 1966, they moved to Marshall’s childhood family home near Laurens.

Marshall and Janice had a true love story.

A devoted husband and father, Marshall loved to farm and he and Janice worked together teaching their children a good work ethic through raising dairy, hogs, cattle and crops. Marshall also was employed with Hersom Construction in nearby Laurens for many years. His family will never forget his hard-work ethic, honest attitude and sense of humor.

Marshall was a longtime faithful member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City.

Marshall’s life will always be honored, cherished and celebrated by his children: Becky (Steve) Orwig of Sioux Rapids; Jerry (Jayne) Peterson of Iroquois, Ill.; Laurie (Brett) Simonsen of Norfolk, Neb.; Jeff (Ruby) Peterson of Albert City; grandchildren: Nick Heppner, Tabitha (Dallas, Jr.) Heckens, Jessica Peterson, Alecia (Zach) Lowry, Scott (Emily) Simonsen, Mariah Marquardt-Orwig (special friend, Justin Melia)  and Amber Simonsen (special friend, Kole Peterson); great-grandchildren: Layne Heppner, Hunter Lowry, Hayden Lowry, Owen Heppner, Corbin Heckens, Averie Heppner, Eben Heckens, Wren Heppner and Skylar Heckens, and other extended family along with many friends.
