Lois D. Adams, age 95, of Albert City, Iowa died Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City, Iowa

Funeral services will be Monday, September 29, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.

Lois Darlyn Adams was born August 31, 1919, the third child born to Jesse Yocum and Yarda (Evaline) Adams. She was born in Albert City, Iowa.

Lois attended the Albert City schools for twelve years, graduating with the class of 1937. She was confirmed on June 2, 1935, when Reverend Arthur Peterson was the Pastor of the Evangelical Free Church.

After her father died, the family moved to Storm Lake, Iowa where she worked for Swanson’s Food Store and for the Daily Advertiser, a shopper which was delivered door-to-door in the city.

Lois later moved to Beresford, South Dakota. There she worked for her sister, Gail, and her husband, Bo Nichols. They owned and edited the local paper, the Beresford Republic. She was a lino-typist and operated a press.

While Lois was in Beresford, the Second World War began. She enlisted in the Marine Corps in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Lois served in the transportation division from April 1943, until April 1946. She drove a semi-truck on base and to other cities. While in the Marines, Lois was on the base softball team and also on the bowling team.

In 1946, Lois was out of the Marines and moved to Stowe, Pennsylvania, where she worked at Stanley Flaggs for nine years. While there, Lois worked weekends at the local airport. She also took flying lessons and obtained her pilot’s license. Lois also played softball in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and their team won the state tournament. They played in the world tournament in Portland, Oregon.

Lois moved to Telford, Pennsylvania where she worked for twelve years for American Olean Tile Company, located in Lansdale. She refereed girl’s high school and college basketball.

In 1967, she returned to Albert City to care for her mother. Lois was not idle. She umpired high school softball for several years. She also became the caretaker of the cemetery. This she did for twelve years, and as usual, she did a great job.

The Albert City Schools employed Lois for thirty-five years. She served them in various ways. Lois drove one of the buses and became the good friend of the pupils who rode her bus. She also did the laundry and worked the lunchroom. Lois retired in 2002.

After this, she helped at the Senior Center. In later years, she became a “driver” for different women of the community; driving them to doctor appointments, the beauty shop, to do their shopping, taking them to and from the hospital, etc. Lois enjoyed being able to help them. Lois also loved animals and dog sat for many dogs for people going on vacations.

She lived a very full life and enjoyed being of service to the people in Albert City. Lois loved to cook and bake, especially her caramels and lemon pie. The good things she prepared she shared willingly with her neighbors and friends.

Lois departed this life on September 27, 2014, at the age of 95.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jesse Yocum Adams in 1935; and mother, Yarda Evaline Adams-Ray in 1979. Lois was also preceded in death by her brothers, Roland L. Adams and James Adams; sister, Gail Adams-Nichols; brother-in-law, James Scott; sister-in-law, Lois M. Adams; step-father, Forest Ray.

Lois leaves to mourn her passing a sister, Mary Jane Adams-Scott of Loomis, California; sister-in-law Janet Adams; six nieces, two nephews, many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews; and several cousins.
