Lois Johnson Obituary

Lois A. (Crummer) Johnson, 103, was reunited with her Savior and those she loved so dearly on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

Celebration of Life services will be held Saturday, June 6, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Methodist Church in Webb, Iowa. Visitation will take place Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 1-4:00 p.m. all at the CHURCH. Private graveside services were held in the Garfield Township Cemetery in Webb. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born on August 23, 1922, to Ray and Edla (Gulgren) Crummer in Pocahontas, Iowa.  Lois lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service. She was raised on a farm outside Pocahontas, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse - an experience that shaped her strong work ethic and lifelong love of learning. After graduating from Pocahontas Public Schools, Lois attended Iowa State Teacher College (now UNI - University of Northern Iowa), earning her Elementary Teaching Certificate. She went on to teach in Meriden, Rolfe, and Sac City, where she touched many young lives through her dedication and care.

On June 11, 1948, Lois married Dean Johnson. The couple began farming near Pomeroy, Iowa, and in 1951 moved to a farm outside Webb in Clay County, where they would spend the rest of their lives building a home, a livelihood, and a legacy together.

At their farmhouse stood a cherished section of white picket fence, preserved from her parents’ farm. As a young girl, Lois had whitewashed that very fence each summer for 25 cents. It was said that the fence served as a quiet signal to those less fortunate that food and shelter could be found just beyond it - a symbol of generosity and compassion that Lois carried with her throughout her life.

The early years of farming required long hours and unwavering determination, as Lois worked alongside Dean, caring for dairy cows, swine, chickens, and the land, all while braving the challenges of Iowa weather. She tended her large garden lined with 4 o’clocks, canned her famous bing cherries, and always had cookies in the refrigerator for anyone passing through.  Her strength, kindness, and devotion were evident in all she did.

Lois was always mindful of good nutrition and healthy eating habits. She was creative in finding ways to encourage her children and grandchildren to drink their milk and eat their fruit, with the use of a vintage milk pitcher in the shape of a little elephant and fancy bowls and spoons - she made it an experience that we all looked forward to. For many years, she took pride in “caring” for the field crews by preparing and bringing nutritious meals out to them. In the later years, she delighted in hosting around her table - rather than delivering, respectfully the harvesters honored this and welcomed the reprieve from the hectic pace.

A woman of deep and abiding faith, Lois served as the organist at Webb United Methodist Church for 55 years. She found great joy in music, spending countless hours playing the piano and organ while accompanying soloists, choirs, small groups, and South Clay school programs. One of her greatest joys was teaching piano and organ students and sharing in their accomplishments.

Lois was an active and dedicated member of her community. She joined the United Methodist Women in 1951, as well as the Twentieth Century Study Federated Club. She served on the Garfield Township Board for primary and general elections and chaired the Republican committee. She was also a Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Her sharp mind and unwavering faith allowed her to cherish every moment of her 103 years, a lifespan fueled by her dedication to family. She remained sincerely interested in the activities and events of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, keeping them all close in her prayers until her final days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Edla Crummer; her husband, Dean Johnson; her sister, Eleanor Anderson; and her granddaughter, Ashley Lorraine King.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Gary (Barb) Johnson of Webb; her daughter, Kerry (Dennis) King of Dickens; and her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and friends.
