Jean Stout Obituary

Jean Stout, age 91, formerly of Ames, IA passed away Tuesday, December 12 at New Glarus Home, New Glarus, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will take place Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.

Jean Stout was born May 28, 1932 to Lily (Carlson) and Art Loving. Her formative years were spent on the family farm in Albert City, Iowa and she was passionately involved with its management to the end. Stories abound of the farm adventures with her brother, Erland, and cousins Byron and Lael Loving.

Her love for the Lord was demonstrated through her values of independence and friendship and her passion for travel and business.

Jean graduated from Iowa State College with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics education in 1954. She taught Home Economics in Cedar Falls, Iowa and later in Illinois. After returning to Iowa, she entered the field of real estate, eventually establishing her own real estate brokerage, Jean Stout Real Estate.

After marriage to Edward Stout in 1957, she moved with him as he completed his naval service. Upon Ed’s discharge from the navy, she moved with him to Royal Oak, MI where their two daughters, Cynthia Jean and Rebecca K. were born. Ed’s career took them to Rockford, then La Salle, IL and ultimately returned them to Ames, Iowa where she lived and thrived for almost 50 years. Along the way she served in volunteer roles in church, and community, often as the president or the organizer of large events such as youth retreats or AWANA.

She enjoyed entertaining family and friends, particularly after ISU sporting events. Friends were always welcomed in her home and many considered Jean to be their second mother. During the empty nest years, she and Ed frequently housed Japanese students in their home. She enjoyed traveling, beginning with a memorable tour of Europe before marriage, and later joining Ed on business trips abroad and on driving trips around the country.

Challenges with hearing and other health issues prompted a difficult move to Monroe, Wisconsin at the end of 2019. Continued decline required a move to skilled care in New Glarus, WI in January 2023. In spite of difficulty with mobility and communication, she remained interested in news of friends, the farm, her daughters’ lives and especially visits from the grand dogs. She is preceded in death by Ed Stout, her husband of 54 years, her brother Erland Loving, and sister Patricia Loving.

She is survived by daughters Cynthia Lord (Shawn McGettigan) of Belleville, WI, and Rebecca Stout of Commerce Township, MI.
