Helen M. Sliefert, age 95, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Sunday, March 13, 2016 at her home in Storm Lake surrounded by her daughters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place Friday, March 18, 2016 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. In lieu of flowers, a fund in Helen's memory has been established at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake or a charity of your choice. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Helen M. Imlay was born on February 2, 1921 on the family farm in Ida County, Iowa to James S. and Cora B. Imlay. She attended country school in Ida County, later graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1938. After attending Buena Vista College for two years, she taught country school northeast of Storm Lake.
Helen was united in marriage to Lawrence C. Sliefert on August 21, 1942 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Three daughters were born to this union: Maxine, Linda, and Nancy. She was active in the girls’ activities during their school years.
Helen completed her baccalaureate degree in elementary education from Buena Vista College in 1966. She went on to teach in the Newell Schools until her retirement. Following retirement, she taught GED class for several years.
Helen was a longtime member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church and active in various groups within the church. She was also a member of the Storm Lake Federated Garden Club and the Rebekah’s. In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking and reading. Helen treasured her garden, especially the flowers and birds. Family was very important to Helen and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters: Maxine Sliefert of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Linda Sliefert of Muscatine, Iowa and Nancy Sliefert of Storm Lake, Iowa; nephews; nieces; extended family and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James lmlay; and her husband, Lawrence in 2008.
