Helen W. Rasmussen, age 94, of Olathe, Kansas and formerly of Albert City, Iowa passed away May 19, 2021 in Olathe.
Funeral Mass will take place Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City, Iowa. Visitation will take place Monday, May 24, 2021 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
Helen, daughter of Michael and Mary (Bose) Miller, was born in Olpe, Kansas, on July 7, 1926. After moving to Iowa, she spent most of her teenage years in Bayard, Iowa where she graduated from High School. After graduating, she worked for the telephone company in Des Moines. She met her future husband in Des Moines while out with friends going to dance clubs.
Helen was united in marriage to John Rasmussen on July 1, 1950 in Des Moines. That summer they moved to Albert City, Iowa. They arrived in a Model T Ford that Helen bought with her hard-earned savings. They lived there together for 61 years before John died in 2012. She spent the last few years of her life at Countryside Living in Albert City, Iowa and with her son and daughter-in-law David and Revellia Rasmussen in Olathe, Kansas.
She had several jobs in Albert City while raising a family of six children. She worked in Ed Sundholm’s grease gun factory and the hardware store on Main Street. She tested corn at the elevator and later in life worked at Pleasant View Nursing home.
Helen was a long-time parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Laurens, Iowa and St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa. She led a full life and cherished her many friends. She was a Cub Scout leader and an avid card player, her favorites being Bridge, 500 and Hand and Foot. She loved big family reunions and summer picnics and making cinnamon rolls.
Helen is survived by her six children and spouses, Stephen (Sidney) of Lilburn, Georgia, Teresa Pierce of Overland Park, Kansas, David (Revellia) Rasmussen of Olathe, Kansas, Mary Case of Monument, Colorado, Monica (Jerry) Stone of Springfield, Illinois, and Mark (Michele) Rasmussen of Gainesville, Georgia, 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, two sisters, Elsie Lovrien of Clarksville, Iowa and Marie Kult of Tucson, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her husband John, sons-in-law Bruce Case and Roger Pierce and six brothers.
