Helen Babcock

Helen Babcock, age 97, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa died Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral Mass will take place Monday, October 30, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan, Iowa. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick’s Cedar Cemetery in Churdan. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 29, 2023 from 4-6:00 p.m. with Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Mary Schmitt was born to John and Mary (Grace) Schmitt on October 12, 1926. She was raised in Churdan, Iowa and graduated from Lohrville School in May of 1944. Helen was a hard worker. She served as a school cook and homemaker for her four boys: David, Daniel, Thomas and Michael. She had a son in school from 1954 through 1991 and served as Den mother for all of them while they were in Cub Scouts.

Helen was a deeply religious and faithful woman her entire life. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and helped to organize the Senior Citizen Dinner date. In her free time, Helen was an avid reader and enjoyed sticker book puzzles and word searches. She also enjoyed playing cards with her friends. Helen loved to dance, and she was good at it. She last danced at her grandson Andrew and Erin's wedding in her wheelchair and her smile lit up the room. Helen will be remembered for her kindness and generosity. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish Helen’s memory include her four sons: David Allen of Bethany, Missouri; Daniel Allen of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Thomas (Rhonda) Allen of Boone, Iowa; Michael Babcock (Tammy Groth) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sisters: Theresa Ward of Papillion, Nebraska; sister-in-law: Patricia Schmitt of Lohrville, Iowa; grandchildren: Kendra Allen; Andrew Allen; Lisa Allen; Cari Jones; David Allen; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; extended family and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents: John and Mary (Grace) Schmitt; brother: Paul Schmitt; daughter-in-law: Kathey Allen; niece: Kathy Schmitt; and granddaughter: Lori Adams.
