George Elwood “Bud” Garton, the son of George and Florence (Larson) Garton, was born on March 9, 1935 on a farm near Marathon, Iowa. He graduated from Albert City High School in 1952.
On June 25, 1961, he married the love of his life, Ruth Alpers, at the First Lutheran Church of Fonda, Iowa. The couple resided in Albert City for nearly 60 years and looked forward to celebrating their 60th anniversary this June.
Joining their family in the early 70’s was their niece, Andrea, and nephews, Alan and Aaron Christenson. Bud and Ruth raised them as their own, encouraging them in activities in school, church, and scouts.
Bud worked in construction for over 50 years in the Albert City area. He was a long-time director of the Albert City Historical Society and was presently serving as the vice president. He also served on the board of the Albert City swimming pool. Bud’s faith was very important to him; he was confirmed as an adult at the First Lutheran Church and was a dedicated worker doing many things to promote the church, currently serving as church president.
Bud was a loving husband, a beloved uncle and a faithful friend to many. He was always willing to help a friend in need. Bud will be remembered as speaking highly of others and never having an unkind word to say. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He loved fishing, gardening, reading and watching sports on TV and was a whiz at history and sports trivia.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, sister-in-law, Irene Chase of Albert City, Iowa; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gib (Jan) Alpers of Fonda, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews including: Andrea (Rob) Reed of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Alan Christenson of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and Aaron (Angie) Christenson of Laurens, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Florence Garton; sisters: Elaine (Andy) Christenson; Shirley (Lowell) Fales; and Sharon (Darel) Geary.
