Gene Allen, age 84, of Albert City, Iowa passed to his heavenly home on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Evangelical Free Church in Albert City. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. Visitation will take place Wednesday, September 21, 2016 from 5-8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
Gene Eldon Allen, the son of Ray and Amelia (Olson) Allen, was born in Storm Lake, Iowa on November 21, 1931. Gene grew up on a farm near Albert City, Iowa. He was confirmed in the Varina Methodist Church, in Varina, Iowa. Graduated from Albert City High School in 1949, and continued his education and graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Economics in December 1953, when he also received his commission as Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
On January 7, 1954 Gene married Myrtis Nordine of Albert City at the Evangelical Free Church. Their marriage was blessed with three sons, Gary, Bruce and Michael.
Gene spent sixteen years serving his country, two years stationed at Roswell, Air Force Base, in Roswell, New Mexico, and 14 years in the reserves.
Following active duty, Gene returned to Albert City and farming. In his fifty years of farming, he was also very active in the following organizations: Farm Bureau, Cattleman’s Association and Pocahontas Extension Council.
Gene was a long-time member of the Albert City Evangelical Free Church, where he truly enjoyed many years of serving on the church board. In later years, he was very grateful for the assistance of fellow members and friends of the church who were so helpful and compassionate for his physical needs as a result of 25 years dealing with Parkinson’s.
Gene will be remembered as a frugal man whose family came first and meant the world to him. He will be deeply missed. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 62 years, Myrtis and the rest of his family, which includes sons, Gary (Diane ) Allen of Storm Lake, Iowa, Bruce (Connie) Allen of West Des Moines, Iowa and Mike Allen (special friend Cindy Falk) of Champlin, Minnesota. Grandchildren, Kyle Allen (special friend Courtney Stubblefield) of Firestone, Colorado, Kelli (Chris) Beedle of Soldier, Iowa, Erica Allen of Rochester, Minnesota, Rob Allen, of Ames, Iowa, Katie Allen of Ames, Iowa, Chris Allen and Marie Campion, of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Emily Allen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Great grandchildren, Morgan and Aaron Beedle of Soldier, Iowa and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Amelia Allen, brother Herbert Allen and sisters, Edna Walton and Gladys Schossow.
