Growing up, Fay was raised on the family farm near Marathon where she attended school graduating from Marathon High School in 1954.

On June 19, 1954, Fay was united in marriage to John “Jack” Theeler. Fay and Jack lived and farmed the family farm north of Alta, Iowa until moving to Linn Grove in September of 1989. Fay also worked at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids for 16 years as an activity coordinator.
