Edith Johanna (Grodahl) age 96, of Loma Linda, California and formerly of the Rembrandt and Storm Lake, Iowa, area died on April 29, 2015 in Loma Linda.

Graveside services were held Friday, May 8, 2015, at 1:00 PM at the Buena Vista Memorial park Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Storm Lake was in charge of arrangements.

Edith Johanna Grodahl, the daughter of Gunnar and Minnie Sophie (Hensel) Grodahl was born in Rembrandt, Iowa, on November 26, 1918. She lived her youth and received her education in the Rembrandt community, graduating from the Rembrandt High School in 1936. Edith continued her education at A.I.B. in Des Moines, Iowa where she received a degree in business. Edith was an active member of the Little Sioux Valley Lutheran Church in Rembrandt and the Rembrandt 4-H Club.

On November 10, 1963, Edith was united in marriage to Carl Edwin Bates in Los Angeles, California. Her professional career was focused entirely in the medical field which began at Pierce Optical Office in Storm Lake, Iowa. Edith relocated to San Diego and Los Angeles, California in 1942 where she was associated with the College of Medical Evangelists and the Glendale Adventist Medical Center in Glendale, California.

Edith is survived by her brother, Bernard Grodahl; two sisters: Joyce Hughes and Virginia Anderson; nephews: Douglas Swanson, Raymond Swanson, Jim Hughes and Jeff Hughes; and her niece, Joni Peetz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl E. Bates; and one sister, Bernice Copp.

The Bates family would like to thank the Everett Forest Board and Care in Loma Linda, California and the Gracious Hospice for their kind and loving care of Edith in her later years.
