Duane “Dewey” Henry Ludwig was born May 4, 1928 to Anthony and Ida (Steinkamp) Ludwig at Jackson Township in Calhoun County, Iowa. He was baptized and later confirmed his faith at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Mount Carmel, Iowa. Dewey remained firm in his catholic faith throughout his life. He was a faithful member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids where he mowed the lawn, moved snow, and installed stained-glass windows in the late 1970’s.

Dewey was united in marriage to Grace Marie Reis on August 22, 1950 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, Iowa. The couple was blessed with seven children: Mark, Jeff, Paul, Sue, Carol, Jane and Kurt. On July 10, 1982, Dewey married Betty Cheevers at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. He welcomed Betty’s son, Kurt.

On August 2, 1951, Dewey entered the U.S. Army where he served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged January 4, 1952. Dewey farmed and was later involved with a partner Grau Enterprise that built farming attachments that helped make a tough job easier. He also owned a gravel business and a construction business. Dewey was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion in Sioux Rapids and the Sioux Rapids Fire Department for 10 years.

Dewey was passionate about golfing. You could find him on the greens of the Little Sioux Golf and Country Club in Sioux Rapids where he was a devoted member. He held a special talent working with stained glass. Dewey loved playing cards his whole life but especially in his later years with the morning coffee guys.

More than anything, Dewey treasured time with his family. His children have many fond memories of hunting and fishing together with Dad. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
