Donald Carl Herrig was born on September 8, 1927 in Wall Lake, Iowa to Carl and Bena (Kies) Herrig. At the age of three, his family moved to Buena Vista County, where he remained for the rest of his life. He graduated from Rembrandt in 1945. He joined the Army/Air Force in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was united in marriage to Elaine Harold of Albert City on January 1, 1946, in Lawton, OK. To this union they were blessed with four sons: Terry, Craig, Scott, Mark and honorary son, Art Shaykhislamo. They lived in Shreveport, LA for a short time, before moving to Rembrandt, where he farmed. In 1951, they moved to a farm northeast of Albert City, where Don grain farmed, and raised turkeys, hogs, and cattle. Don and Harold Gustafson were the first to raise turkeys commercially in the Albert City area. In 1968, Don and Elaine moved into town, and built chicken houses where they raised laying hens. Don and Elaine loved to camp at the Sunrise Campground in Storm Lake. They also loved sitting by the campfire every night. Don has been a faithful member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church as well as the American Legion and the Lions Club. He also was a 4H leader, on the BV County fair board, and was on the AC-T school board for nine years (serving as president for some of those years).
