Candyce “Candy” Valorie Long was born to Warren and Wanda (Hoffert) Long on March 19, 1960 in Columbia, South Carolina.

Candy attended elementary school in Cylinder, Iowa and went on to graduate high school from Emmetsburg, Iowa. Prior to her senior year in high school, she met the love of her life, Mark Eugene Thompson at the racetrack in Alta, Iowa. To say it was love at first sight is an understatement as Mark said within minutes of seeing her, she was going to be his wife. On January 13, 1978, Candy graduated high school. On January 14, 1978, Mark and       Candy married at the United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa. To this union, they had six children: Christina, Angela, Jeffrey, Melanie, Mark “Squeak”, and Stephanie.

Candy worked many jobs over her life that typically revolved around agriculture, bartending, cleaning, and babysitting. Candy was a lifeguard and manager at the Sioux Rapids Pool. Candy was also a talented seamstress, often known for making beautiful quilts, dresses, clothes, and much more. Her most prideful yet notable life role was being a wife, mother, and grandmother. Her grandchildren seemed to wrap her the easiest around their fingers.

Candy had several hobbies and interests ranging from camping, fishing, sewing, baking, gardening, and crocheting. She was a sports fan and enjoyed watching the Cubs, Packers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones, and the Chiefs. Her greatest pride and joy was following her grandkids’ activities and buying/decorating for the holidays, especially Christmas.

Candy is preceded in death by her parents: Warren and Wanda Long; parents-in-law: Ivan and Virginia Thompson; her maternal and paternal grandparents; brother-in-law: David Thompson; and sister-in-law: Barbara Sundberg.

Left to cherish Candy’s memory include her beloved husband: Mark Thompson of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; children: Christy (Eric) Driver of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Angela (Paul) Christian of Linn Grove, Iowa; Jeffrey (Jessica) Thompson of Ruthven, Iowa; Melanie (Mathew) Elbert of Whittemore, Iowa; Mark (Niki) Thompson of Sutherland, Iowa; Stephanie (Paul) Piddington of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren: Connor, Layla, Lilly, Aiden, Nora, Jack, Landon, Madelynn, Zander, Nolan, Parker, Finley, Logan, Hudson, Allison, Ivan, and a host of other family and friends.
