Arlyn Youngberg, age 85, of Albert City, Iowa died Friday, November 14, 2014 at Pleasant View Home in Albert City.

Arlyn Keith Youngberg, the son of Joel and Hazel (Johnson) Youngberg, was born in Albert City, Iowa, on September 27, 1929. He lived his youth in the Albert City community where he received his education and graduated from Albert City High School in 1947. Arlyn continued his education at North Park College in Chicago, Illinois where he received his Associate of Arts Degree. He then attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and attained his Bachelor of Arts Degree.

On December 20, 1952, Arlyn was united in marriage to Lenore Johnson at Redeemer Covenant Church in Chicago, Illinois and this union was blessed with five children: Mark, Brian, Corrin, Sheldon, and Sharon. Arlyn began his teaching career in Sterling, IL before returning to Albert City to farm. After a number of years, he re-entered the field of education and did so in the Sioux Rapids, Marathon and Laurens communities while continuing to farm.

Family, and anything connected with family, was Arlyn’s consuming passion. Priority one was gathering that family for church events, holidays and reunions of various sorts. Later years were a steady stream of travel to see all manner of sporting events, concerts, plays or graduations that had any of his and Lenore’s grandchildren as a participant. Though his teaching and coaching days were past, the passion he brought to those positions continued to be exercised in the motivation and love given to his kids and grandchildren. His love for his farming roots found its place in working with his multiple Percheron draft horse teams and the Albert City Thresherman’s Association. He spent free time reading, woodworking and writing his memories of the way farm life used to be for newspaper publication. Arlyn was involved in the life of his church through teaching and leadership positions on both local and conference levels that allowed his love for the Lord to be shown. Over the years, there were also civic activities involving 4-H and county related ag responsibilities.

Arlyn’s life and memories will always be honored and cherished by his family which include his wife of 61 years, Lenore of Albert City, Iowa; his children: Mark (Karin) Youngberg of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Brian (Alena) Youngberg of Apple Valley, Minnesota; Corrin (Ron) Brechler of Laurens, Iowa; Sheldon (Marianne) Youngberg of Pocahontas, Iowa; and Sharon (Brad) Walkup of Des Moines, Iowa; his grandchildren: Joel (Carrie) Youngberg of Little Falls, Minnesota; Kia (Tommy) Hofer of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; Krista Youngberg of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Alan and Elsa Youngberg of Apple Valley, Minnesota; Jason (Elizabeth Becker) Brechler of Aiken, South Carolina; Kristi (Ryan) Dillon of Ames, Iowa; David Brechler of Iowa City, Iowa; and Gary Brechler of Johnston, Iowa; Erika (Bill) Schmitt of West Des Moines, Iowa; Kirsten (fiancé Justin Hochstetler) of Waverly, Iowa; Aaron Youngberg of St. Paul, Minnesota; and Tanner Youngberg of Pocahontas, Iowa; Cody Walkup of Iowa City, Iowa; and Logan Walkup of Wheaton, Illinois; his great grandchildren: Malin, Ehlin, and Soren Youngberg of Little Falls, Minnesota; Mya and Carmindy Dillon of Ames, Iowa; and Oliver Schmitt of West Des Moines, Iowa; his sister, Vivadelle Youngberg Odell of Albert City, Iowa; and other extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joel and Hazel Youngberg; and his brother-in-law, Frank Odell.
