Doris Elaine Paulson, the daughter of Albert and Esther (Kort) Paulson was born at Sheldon, Iowa on July 26, 1938.  She was welcomed home by two sisters: Lavon and Lois and a brother, Donald, later joined their family. She was baptized on December 25, 1938.  Doris was a 1956 graduate of the Sheldon High School.  She continued her education at Iowa State College (University) at Ames, Iowa where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics in 1960.  Her first teaching position was with the Spirit Lake High School.

On July 2, 1961, Doris was united in marriage to her college sweetheart and the love her of life, Richard Fondroy, at Sheldon, Iowa. This marriage was blessed with four children: Darrel, Elaine, Susan, and Amy.  Doris continued her teaching career at the Laurens High School until they began their family.  Dick and Doris moved to the Fondroy family farm where they were busily engaged in farming and raising their family.

Later Doris returned to the classroom where she taught pre-school at the Gingerbread House in Storm Lake for 4 years. Doris taught for 13 years at the Albert City-Truesdale Community School and a shared position with Laurens High School.  She will always be remembered for the many hundreds of handmade cupcakes delivered on Valentine’s Day in school and the community.  During her retirement, she continued to be involved with education by serving as a substitute teacher for area schools. Doris was a past president of the local Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educations and served on committees for the Upsilon State (Iowa) organization. Her lifelong friendship with women educators was an inspiration and joy to her.  Many former students and teaching friends have stayed in contact with her through the years.

In supporting and nurturing her children, Doris was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader, a 4-H Club leader and many 4-H committees, the 4-H extension council and serving as a 4-H judge. Her judging responsibilities encompassed the county and state levels for 56 years.  Doris loved the opportunity to connect with young people and was humbled and proud to be inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.

Doris was an active member of St.  John’s Lutheran Church, served on the Church Council, Garden Club, Library Board, and Just-A-Club.  She shared her talents of baking, sewing, flower arranging, and community event organizing.

Grandchildren were God’s gift to her and Richard.  Their talents became a real opportunity to travel to their events. Each child has their own memories of special projects made with Grandma.

Doris’ life and memory will always be honored and cherished by her family which include her daughters: Susan (Brian) Carstens of Lino Lakes, MN, and Amy Fondroy Eich (Pat Eich) of Prescott, WI; son-in-law, Paul Floy of Owatonna, Minnesota, and seven grandchildren: Martha and Sarah Floy, Nathan and Bethany Carstens, and Alexander, Deitrich, and Frasier Eich, her brother, Donald Paulson of Sheldon, Iowa, other extended family and many friends.
