Roland B. Nordlund, age 87, of Albert City, Iowa, died December 5, 2010 at his rural Albert City home.Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 from 4-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City where the family will be present the entire time. Burial will be at a later date in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
Roland Burdette Nordlund, the son of Sigfrid and Mabel (Anderson) Nordlund, was born in Albert City, Iowa, on October 23, 1923. He lived his youth and received his education in Albert City, graduating from the Albert City High School. Roland furthered his education at Notre Dame University, North Park College, and Central Michigan College. He faithfully served his country in the United States Navy from December 8, 1942 to July 23, 1946. He ultimately attained the rank of Ensign.
On February 15, 1947, Roland was united in marriage to Dorothy N. Johnson in Kansas City, Missouri, and this marriage was blessed with five children: James, Diane, Shari, Randy, and Julie. Roland and Dorothy raised their family on the family farm. Roland was completely devoted to his farming vocation which he began when he returned from his military service and retired from active farming at the age of 74. Along with grain farming, Roland also raised chickens, cattle, and hogs.
He was a member of the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Albert City and a proud member of the Dyvad-Gustafson American Legion Post #299 of Albert City. Roland also enjoyed recreational bowling and camping with his family when they were younger. The culmination of his military service was being able to see the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC made possible by the Iowa Honor Flight in November, 2009.
Those who will always love, honor, and cherish Roland’s memory include his children: Jim and Shari Nordlund of Humboldt, IA; Dianne and Mike Ahlers of Indianola, IA; Shari Hawk of Ankeny, IA; and Julie and Craig Gramenz of Ankeny, IA; 9 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; three sisters: Izetta Peterson of Fonda, IA; Vivian Christoffers of Pocahontas, IA; and Joyce (Maurice) Peterson of Albert City, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other extended family and many lifelong friends.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, on November 22, 2008; and his son, Randy on May 10, 2010.
