Lil was born in Battle Harbor, Labrador on January 29, 1927 to John and Abigail (Sutton) Rumbolt. Lelah began attending Riverside Presbyterian Church in the spring of 1972, shortly after receiving Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. Lil enjoyed teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Women’s small groups for over 30 years at the Riverside Presbyterian Church.
In 1951, Lil was united in marriage to Charles L. Phinney at the St. John’s Church in Newfoundland. Shortly after her marriage to Chuck, she became a United States Citizen. Together they were blessed with six children: Sheila (1952), Patrick and Michael (1953), Stephen (1955), Donna (1961), and LuCinda (1968). After holding residence in Utah, Texas, England and Kansas, the Phinney family settled in Linn Grove, Iowa in 1968. While in Linn Grove, Chuck and Lil were school custodians for 10 years.
Lil’s spiritual gifts include evangelism, exhortation and service. Her outreach, through Christ, has covered some of the most remote parts of the earth through her quilting ministry. Her prayer ministry has blessed the lives of the broken hearted throughout the world, as well as her love and devotion to the Awana program.
Lil’s legacy will be lived on the hearts of all those who loved her. “Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, You will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth You will bring me up.” (Psalm 71:20)
