Joy I. Peters

Joy I. Peters, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa died February 3, 2012 at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., Monday, February 6, 2012 at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present to greet friends. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Joy Irene Meyer, the sixth child of Adam and Mae (Cornell) Meyer, was born near Nemaha, Iowa on May 28, 1925.  She grew up on a farm in Sac County and received her education in Nemaha and Early. She moved with her family in 1941 to Storm Lake where she met Lowell Peters.

On March 28, 1943 Joy and Lowell were united in marriage and this union was blessed with two sons: Dennis and Douglas. Lowell served his county in the United States Army during World War II for two years where he was stationed in the Philippines. Following his honorable discharge, they purchased livestock and were engaged in the trucking business for many years. Joy served as the bookkeeper for the companies. In 1947, Joy was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. During their retirement, they purchased a camper and spent the next several winters in Arizona. When Lowell suffered a stroke in 1991, they spent all of their time in Storm Lake. Lowell passed away in 1997.

Joy enjoyed doing puzzle books, gambling in Sloan, Iowa and having coffee with her friends. She also loved crocheting, making many afghans and potholders enjoyed and treasured by relatives and friends. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Storm Lake.

Joy’s life will always be honored and celebrated by her children: Dennis (Diane) Peters of Storm Lake, Iowa; Doug (Sharen) Peters of Storm Lake, Iowa; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; brother, Donald (June) Meyer of Aberdeen, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Evelyn Meyer of Alta, Iowa; other extended family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lowell; four sisters: Etoyle, Lorraine, Lois, and Geraldine; and two brothers: Bud and Ardell.
