Thelma Weier, age 72, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa died November 15, 2017 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. 

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Church of Sioux Rapids. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery. Visitation will take place Monday, November 20, 2017 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements. 

Thelma Kay Thompson was born August 26, 1945 at Sickles Hospital in Sioux Rapids, Iowa to Loren Earl and Dorothy Kathryn (Schneider) Thompson.  She was raised in Sioux Rapids and graduated from Sioux Rapids High School.  She went to Omaha for a while for post-secondary school.

On October 1, 1966, she married Keith G. Weier in Sioux Rapids. To this union were born four children: Dorothy, John, David and Kenneth. 

Thelma worked 27 years at Bil-Mar Foods in Storm Lake. She also worked part-time at Alice’s Steak House in Sioux Rapids and Super Value in Spencer, K-Mart in Spencer and was part-owner of J & T Bar and Grill in Sioux Rapids. 

Growing up on the farm, she helped raise a great deal of what the family ate--vegetables and meats.  The family spent a lot of summers having “canning parties” at the house, especially during tomato and corn season.  She also “hosted” numerous “chicken plucking” parties---all to get food ready for the winter freezer.  No one ever went hungry at her house; if you were there, you ate!

Thelma loved to play Skipbo with the in-laws and in later years, Johnny Tractor dominoes with her granddaughter, Tara. You could usually find her with a color book or a search-a-word book. If she wasn’t doing those things, she was watching the game show channel or cruising with Tara.    

Staying in touch with friends and family was important to her. Thelma went to kids’ activities at school and church and the grandkids’ events when she could. They were all very important to her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Keith of Sioux Rapids; daughter, Dorothy (Fred) Machholz of Sioux Rapids; sons: John (Frankie) Weier of Spencer and Kenneth Weier of Sioux Rapids; grandchildren: Tara Machholz, Kazi Mickelson (friend, Dustin), Jesse Mickelson, Michael (Melanie) Vrieze, Jeremy (Emmi) Vrieze, Alex Vrieze, and Jacob Vrieze; great grandson, Cayden Vrieze with another on the way; sister, Rosanna (William) Morrow of Newell and brother, John (Ruth) Thompson of Sioux Rapids; as well as many other family and friends.

Thelma is preceded in death by her son, David; parents, Loren Earl and Dorothy Kathryn; in-laws, Lloy and Jennie Weier; sister, Ruth Bach; and many other family and friends.
