Gladys Berns, daughter of William and Freda (Hebbel) Berns, was born January 3, 1918, in Carroll County, Iowa. She was baptized in St. John Lutheran Church, rural Glidden, and confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church, Storm Lake.

Gladys married Loyal Liebsch on December 22, 1940, in St. John Lutheran Church, Storm Lake. They lived on the farm in Scott Township all their married life. She was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church, Storm Lake, where she was active in the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday School for many years. Gladys earned her B.A. Degree from Buena Vista College and taught for many years in the Albert City-Truesdale Schools, retiring in 1975. Gladys loved teaching!

Loyal Liebsch had serious heart problems most of his adult life. In early February 1978, he entered the hospital at Rochester, Minnesota, for heart surgery to replace and repair heart valves. God called Loyal home in early July 1978.

Gladys married Virgil Heuton, a childhood friend, September 30, 1979. They continued to live on the farm in Scott Township and joined Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake.

With Gladys’ marriage to Virgil Heuton came the added blessing of Virgil’s family.

In their almost thirty years of marriage, Gladys and Virgil enjoyed life on the farm and freedom to travel and visit family and friends. Virgil began having serious health problems the winter of 1998-99. God called Virgil home July 26, 2009.

Gladys continued living on the farm until her health forced her to reside at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City. God called her home, November 1, 2017.

Left to cherish her memory is a sister, Viola Fricke of O’Neal, Nebraska; step son, Steve Heuton of Florida; step son-in-law, Ben Cheshire of Georgia; several step grandchildren; several step great grandchildren; extended family and friends.

Gladys is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Loyal Liebsch; second husband, Virgil Heuton; five brothers, four sisters, three step-daughters, and three step sons.
