Gladyce Vail, age 99, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa died on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at the Hawkeye Care Center in Sioux Rapids.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will follow in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of arrangements

Gladyce Lela Bowers, the daughter of Floyd and Kenney (Waud) Bowers was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on August 9, 1917. She lived her youth in the Sioux Rapids community and received her education there, graduating from Sioux Rapids High School.

On December 31, 1939, Gladyce was united in marriage to Harold Albe Vail at the Congregational Church in Sioux Rapids.  The couple adopted and welcomed two children into their home: Ann Marie and Richard Albe. Following their marriage, Harold and Gladyce farmed near Webb until 1965, when they moved to their farm near Sioux Rapids.  Gladyce was very much a part of the farming operation with Harold.  Harold died in 1992, but Gladyce continued to reside on the farm until 2004, when she became a resident of the Sioux Care Center.

Gladyce was a very capable wife and mother who enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting, making quilts, spending time outdoors and going fishing.  She was an accomplished seamstress who sewed tailored clothing for her children and great grandchildren.  Gladyce is remembered as an excellent cook and even won a contest with the Taste of Home magazine.

Gladyce’s life is remembered by her family which include her son, Richard (Lourene) Vail of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren: Amy, Justin, Stacie and Jason; great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; daughter, Ann Marie; two sisters and one brother.
