Colette was born in Albert City, Iowa on July 25, 1928 to Dorus and Ernest Johnson. She enjoyed growing up on the farm, and after graduation earned a teaching degree at Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). She taught Physical Education, first at Algona High School, and then in Boone, Iowa. Colette was married to Karl Lovin on January 15, 1955. The couple settled in Albert City to farm.

Colette was a rare individual full of spunk and determination. She loved the outdoors, riding trails on horseback, fishing, farming and raising a huge garden from which she put away frozen and canned goods in abundance. She loved cooking and baking and was always eager to try out new recipes.  Food was served five times a day to satisfy the never-ending appetites of those who gathered around her table, or as was often the case, from her picnic basket and ice chest.

Colette was a lifelong member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where she and Karl held fond memories of leading the high school Luther League for several years. She enjoyed various social organizations including Happy Hour Club, Card Club, and Federated Women’s Club.

Karl and Colette were known as a couple who worked together, both in the farming operation, and in raising their three sons. She was not afraid of hard manual labor, but easily set work aside for the many athletic events and other activities of their sons, their grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  She loved family fishing trips, camping vacations, hosting neighbor kids, and helping with 4-H. She and her husband enjoyed many bus tours, especially their annual trips to Branson, MO.

Colette is survived by her husband of 62 years, Karl Lovin, three sons, Gregg (Naomi) Lovin of Nevada, Iowa, Linn (Sue) Lovin of Albert City, and Scott (Dorie) Lovin of Albert City, ten grandchildren, Elly (Jesse Bania) Lovin, Grant Lovin, Maria Lovin, Brittany (David) Treichler, Josef Lovin, Ryan Lovin, Alicia (Jake) Heuton, Luke (Molly) Lovin, Melany (Bryce) Williams, and Zachary (Megan) Lovin, as well as nine great-grandchildren, Asa Lovin, Mercy Lovin, Emelia Lovin, Chase Heuton, Kade Heuton, Tyce Heuton, Isla Lovin, Lydia Williams, and Karvir Lovin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Johnson and Dorus Johnson.

Colette was eager to serve family and friends in many ways and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
